LKR 80 million invested across 39 schools in the North Western Province marks one of the largest private sector education drives in recent years Some of the best technology stories aren't about specs or launches. They're about what technology makes possible for people who need it most. That's the story behind Laptop.lk's "Rebuilding Sri Lanka" initiative, a programme delivered through Technocity, our parent company, that has just wrapped up after putting real, usable digital infrastructure into the hands of more than 18,000 students across the North Western Province. Laptop.lk and Technocity have spent close to three decades building Sri Lanka's technology retail and distribution landscape together, under the same roof and the same leadership. This initiative shows what that experience looks like when it's turned toward giving back, and it's a project worth understanding in full, because the headline numbers only tell part of the story. The full picture involves government partnership, careful planning, a great deal of physical labour across dozens of school sites, and a philosophy about what genuine corporate responsibility should look like. Why this initiative matters Sri Lanka's digital divide has always had a geography to it. Access to computers, reliable internet, and digital skills training has historically clustered around Colombo and a handful of other urban centres, leaving schools in outlying provinces to make do with outdated equipment, or in many cases, no computer lab at all. For a student in a rural school, that gap doesn't just mean fewer hours spent on a keyboard. It can mean falling behind in an economy that increasingly expects digital literacy as a baseline skill, whether a young person goes on to university, vocational training, or straight into the workforce. Teachers feel this gap too. A teacher who wants to bring digital tools into a classroom, whether that's basic computer literacy, typing skills, research, or exposure to software that students will eventually need for exams or employment, can only do so much without functioning hardware. Textbooks can describe a spreadsheet. They cannot teach a student to build one. That distinction is exactly why the "Rebuilding Sri Lanka" initiative was designed the way it was. That's the gap Laptop.lk set out to close in the North Western Province. It's also why the scale of this initiative stands out. Private sector CSR programmes in Sri Lanka are common, and many companies contribute meaningfully to education and community causes each year. But few programmes have combined this level of financial commitment with this level of operational follow through, delivering not just equipment, but fully functioning learning spaces, in a matter of months rather than years. That combination of ambition and speed is what makes this initiative worth writing about at length. A commitment built to last Launched at the end of December and completed by the end of April, the programme reached 18,326 students across 39 schools in just four months. Laptop.lk, through Technocity, backed it with a total investment of roughly LKR 80 million, made up of LKR 20 million in cash channelled through the Prime Minister's Office, and close to LKR 60 million worth of IT equipment and related infrastructure. The initiative was carried out in close collaboration with the Prime Minister's Office, the Ministry of Education, and education authorities across the North Western Province. That level of coordination, spanning zonal education officials, school principals, teachers, and local communities, was what made a four month rollout possible. Programmes of this scale often take years to move from announcement to actual impact on the ground, caught up in procurement cycles, logistics delays, and the sheer administrative weight of coordinating dozens of institutions at once. Our team, working alongside government and education partners, compressed that timeline dramatically, turning a national scale commitment into a completed project within a single school term. It is worth pausing on what that timeline actually required. Thirty nine separate school sites, each with its own layout, its own existing infrastructure, its own staff and schedule, all needed to be assessed, planned for, and then physically fitted out with new equipment. That is not a task that can be rushed carelessly. It requires genuine logistical capability, the kind that only comes from decades of distribution experience across an entire island, the same experience Laptop.lk draws on every day to get the right products to customers all over Sri Lanka. More than computers: building complete learning environments What sets this initiative apart is the thinking behind it. Rather than simply dropping off computers and moving on, Laptop.lk set out to build complete digital learning environments that schools could put to use immediately, and keep using for years to come. That meant nine fully equipped IT laboratories, technology upgrades at participating schools, and the complete equipping of one Zonal Education Office. Each lab was fitted with new Intel Core i5 desktop computers with 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD storage, 22 inch monitors, and all the supporting furniture needed to make the space genuinely functional, including computer tables and chairs designed for a classroom setting rather than an office. It's the kind of detail that separates a donation from an investment. A lab isn't useful if it's just hardware sitting in an empty room with no desks to place it on or chairs for students to sit in. By handling everything from the furniture students sit at to the machines they learn on, Laptop.lk built spaces that teachers and students could walk into and start using right away, without waiting on additional funding, furniture procurement, or electrical work to catch up. We have been direct about the philosophy driving this approach: that access to technology is now an essential part of modern education, and that a student's location or family income shouldn't determine whether they get the chance to build digital skills for the future. That belief is reflected in every part of how the programme was executed, from the choice of specifications for the desktop computers, which were selected to be genuinely capable machines rather than the cheapest available option, to the decision to equip an entire Zonal Education Office so that the administrative side of education in the region also benefits from better technology. In the words of leadership Mohamed Ismail Famy, Chairman of Technocity and Laptop.lk, summed up the intent behind the programme in a simple statement. "Our intention was not simply to donate computers, but to provide complete facilities that students and teachers could genuinely use for many years," he said. "Education and technology can change the direction of a young person's life, and we believe giving students access to these opportunities is one of the most meaningful ways we can contribute to our country." He also pointed to the company's history in Sri Lanka as a driving force behind the decision to invest in education specifically. "Sri Lanka has been the foundation of our growth for more than 28 years," he said. "We believe that as a Sri Lankan company grows, part of that success should return to the communities that helped make that growth possible." Famy also explained why education and technology, rather than any other cause, made sense as a focus for the group. "Technology is the industry we know best, and therefore we felt that using technology to strengthen education was an area where we could make a real and sustainable difference."
